    RANT:

I love the idea of a daily cipher, but the current version is frustrating and isn’t fun.

Why are we limited to two five-letter words…the same word length as Spell Crawler? And that game already feels like it isn’t randomizing its words at all, but that’s another discussion.

With two short words, no context clues, and a “shuffled alphabet” each day, there isn’t enough information to work toward a definite answer. The words don’t have to relate to each other, and invented book vocabulary makes the possibilities even harder to narrow down.

Today I tried multiple answers that fit every known constraint, spent XP on assists, and even brought in ChatGPT to help. Still no solution. We shouldn’t need AI agents to complete a daily fan-site puzzle…and cycling through valid guesses doesn’t feel like deciphering anything.

The assist pricing adds to the frustration: checking a guess costs the same 30 XP as revealing a letter, even though a check can leave you with nothing but more exclusions. And if the words aren’t consistently following the stated substitution pattern, revealing a letter doesn’t fix that. We need to be able to trust the rules we’re solving against.

A category, a short clue, a related word pair, or one free revealed letter would give us something to reason from. Longer phrases would also give the substitution pattern more room to provide useful clues.

I don’t need every puzzle to be easy, I just want enough information for solving it to feel like reasoning rather than guessing until something gets accepted.

My friends and I really love this site and I think we all want to enjoy this feature, but right now, it’s mostly making me want to skip it.

I don’t know if there’s a legitimate rhyme or reason to the cipher.
